About two million people in the United States are impacted by glaucoma. Globally, it is reported that between 11 and 67 million people suffer from the disease.
The word “glaucoma” comes from the ancient Greek word glaukoswhich means blue, green or gray. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that impact the optic nerve. Risk factors for glaucoma include migraines, a family history of glaucoma, high blood pressure and obesity.
Glaucoma can cause vision loss. If caught early, it is sometimes possible to stop or slow the progression of the disease. Laser treatment, medication and surgery are all available glaucoma treatment options.
