What Is Glaucoma?

If you’ve wondered about the definition of glaucoma, you’re not alone. Glaucoma is a common problem that affects millions of people.

So what is glaucoma? A person with glaucoma usually experiences elevated intraocular pressure that causes damage to the optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve is irreversible.

Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision and blindness. In fact, it is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world and especially impacts individuals in third world countries.

Since glaucoma usually shows no symptoms, routine eye exams are critical in catching it. Treatment may involve the use of eye drops, laser treatment or even surgery. Medication is occasionally used. Caught early enough, treatment can keep the disease from advancing and prevent blindness.
